Chapter 22

I wasn’t sure whose idea it was for me to wear a black cape complete with a hood, but I was glad to have something to cover the archaic symbols Astrid had drawn in blood all over my body.

Staring at my reflection in the floor-length mirror in Morgana’s bedroom, I had to admit I looked straight out of a gothic, vampire photo shoot. Only this was real. The blood was real, and even though it was my own, it still grossed the hell out of me.

We were minutes away from leaving the safety of Morgana’s home and heading to Byron Bay. I’d never thought I’d call Morgana’s castle safe, but thanks to the protection spell Astrid and I had placed around the castle, it was exactly that. Safe.

My stomach churned with fear of the unknown. Astrid had warned us we should be ready for anything when we arrived. This God person was unpredictable, and none of us truly knew what he was capable of.

Marcus came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. “You’ll be fine.”

I rubbed my temples, trying to focus on what needed to be done and ignore the doubt bubbling away in my stomach. Then, I realized I was smudging the symbols Astrid had drawn on them. “Shit.”

Stepping closer to the mirror, I assessed the mess I’d made. “Damn it.”

Marcus lifted my hair off my shoulders and away from my face. “I don’t think it’ll matter if they’re not perfect.”

“Oh, it’ll matter.” I grabbed the dagger off the dresser and pressed the blade into the tip of my finger. I barely winced as it pierced my skin and blood pooled on the end of the blade. “Everything has to be perfect, and I’m not going to be the one to stuff this up.”

Marcus took the knife off me. “You’re not going to stuff anything up. We’re going to go back to Byron, you’re going to do what you need to do, and the rest of us are going to keep you safe—if you should need protection.”

I leaned in closer to the mirror and smeared the blood over my temple, trying my best to repair the damage I’d done to the symbol. It looked pretty good, but knowing how particular Astrid was with everything, I’d have to check with her to be sure.

Marcus let go of my hair and neatly tucked it behind my ears so it wouldn’t stick to the fresh blood. “It’s fine,” he said as if he could read my mind.

Astrid tapped on the open bedroom door. “It’s time.”

I twisted around to face her, the knots in my stomach constricting at the thought of what we were about to do. When Astrid had first mentioned the ritual, I had no idea it was going to be this complicated, let alone that I’d be covered in blood.

Now, we were minutes away from figuring out what about the cylinder I was drawn to and the possibility of God sending out his minions to stop us.
